Project Criteria

Park Lodge had been initially reviewed for re construction to cater for a larger family under the project management of Hillingdon Homes. With the recent introduction of the 'Code Level 1' legislation requiring any dwelling under going construction to have a minimum of 10 % on site renewable energy, the development team were keen to explore various different renewable technologies. After looking at several options such as ground source heat and PV cells, it was considerably more cost effective to achieve their requirements via solar thermal.

The brief was to design and install a system that incorporated a DPS thermal store into the heating system to allow the solar energy to assist with the heating of the house as well as the hot water.

The collectors consisted of 2 58x2000mm evacuated tube frames using a 'direct flow' system. Unlike heat pipes which contain no liquid solution, 'direct flow' pipes allow the water and glycol mix to travel up and down within the pipes via a small bore copper rod fixed to the frame manifold which the evacuated tube would then slide over and clip into place.

A closed loop sealed system is then used to circulate the heated fluid through the thermal store coil to heat the store's 300 litre capacity and return the cooled fluid back to the collectors for re heating.
